October is here and that can only mean one thing… Halloween!
Whether you’re heading to a Halloween party or just going trick or treating with the kids, it’s time to think about what you’re going to wear - and if that means making your own Halloween costume, you’re going to need some spooktacular ideas to get started with.
Not sure which way to go? If you’re in need of some inspiration, check out these great ideas for scarily good halloween costumes.
Go… Sinisterly Scary
Of course, it’s the obvious choice for a Halloween costume - and there are no shortage of options. For the scary look it’s all about the make-up, fake blood, and prosthetics. Whether you go as a blood-thirsty zombie or recreate Freddy Kreugers scars, you'll be bound to send shivers down people's spines.
There's plenty of YouTube videos available that will advise you how to apply prosthetics and make-up to achieve the desired look. But we have a little trick for when it comes to creating scars, cuts, or lesions. All you need is vaseline, flour, and foundation - yep, that’s it! Mix 1 part flour to 2 parts vaseline, then add in a couple of pumps of foundation. This mix should combine to form a firm and moldable paste. Simply apply this to your face or body and use eyeshadow and fake blood to transform it into a realistic cut.
Once you have your scary prosthetics and make-up completed, the outfit should be quite easy to pull together. Simply add fake blood to ripped clothes, dress in all black, or recreate classic looks such as the grim reaper, devil, or a witch.
The more unrecognisable you can make yourself the more sinister your costume will become.

Go… Frighteningly Funny
If you want to get laughs rather than screams, there's plenty of frighteningly funny costume options which are more simple to create than you may think. This type of costume has become more popular in more recent years, with one of our favourites being the ‘cereal killer’. You read that right, cereal not serial. Stick some cereal boxes onto a jumper and pour on some fake blood and you’ve got yourself the funniest costume of the night.
You don’t have to have a clever idea to get a funny costume, sometimes dressing as someone unexpected can land you just as many laughs. The wicked grandma is pretty simple to pull off, grab a blouse, long skirt, and grey wig and you’re done. Don’t forget to use a stereotypical old lady voice and stay in character all night long for the best results. You could even turn a funny idea like this into a group costume. What’s more funny than one grandma at a party? A whole pack of naughty grandmas!

If you’re wanting a costume which will make for a good Insta post, then a cute costume will be perfect for you. This type of costume can be as simple or excessive as you want. For a bumble bee, go simple with a DIY yellow and black striped jumper and a pair of wings or go all out with a yellow and black dress, wings, antennas and face paint.
Alternatively, dressing as your favourite celebrity or character is a great costume idea. For the older folk, Elvis and Marylin Monroe are easy to pull off whilst the kids can dress as their favourite disney characters. Current celebs aren’t off limits though, get your pout perfect for Kim Kardashian or secure your hair in a high ponytail for Ariana Grande's look.
If you’re wanting to still be on theme for Halloween but look cute whilst doing it, a mermaid, alien, cowboy, or pirate will be the perfect costume for you. These are quite easy to customise to make as scary or cute as you’d like, and you can always add a little fake blood to any of these ideas to up the gore factor. A top tip for mermaid scales is to use a pair of fishnet tights and eyeshadow to create the look of scales on your face or body. Body glitter is also a great option for an underwater or out of the world look.
