The indoor market initially opened in 1974 but had a huge renovation in 2018. If you’re curious about the history of Barnsley, the Experience Barnsley Museum, in the Grade II listed Town Hall, is a great place to learn! With exhibitions on the towns beloved history, events for your little ones, SEN/learning disability friendly sessions and a lovely little café, there’s something here for everybody. What’s on at the museum changes frequently so each time you visit will be a new experience. A lively, exciting experience for the whole family, just one of the reasons that Experience Barnsley was shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2021.
4. Take a stroll around the Worsbrough Mill country park and enjoy nature and heritage
Worsborough Mill offers lots of relaxing nature walks in their country park and is a popular bird spotting and fishing location. You’ll often be able to spot grey herons, kingfishers, grey wagtail, plus black-headed, common and herring gulls. Want to learn about the history of Worsborough Mill? Full tours with informational guides are available of the mill and museum. You’ll be able to see the whole process of making flour which is also for sale in their shop. Feeling peckish? Why not visit the Millers Tea Room for a light snack and a cup of tea. They even use their own freshly made flour to bake their bread!
5. See a show at the Lamproom Theatre
The Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley was begun in 1999 and has held a variety of professional and highly entertaining shows since. With plenty of shows on, there’s always something for everybody from dramas to comedy, musicians to panto. Fancy a drink? Why not visit the recently refurbished Lamproom bar! Open before and after shows and during intermissions you’ll never go thirsty. You can even pre-order your drinks.
