The Top Things to Do In Coalville

Once an industrial hub and mining town, the aptly named Coalville is now the largest town in North West Leicestershire and is sequestered at the heart of The National Forest. Old miners’ residences are now bustling shop fronts and the old coalfields have turned into flourishing landscapes. With a rich history and a thriving present, it’s a great place to live and visit. Here are just a few of the top things to do in Coalville.

Shopping and Eating

With recent developments and improvements to shop fronts, alongside the opening of a new indoor market, Coalville has more shops, cafes and eateries to explore than ever before.

Head straight to the historic Newmarket for an eclectic mix of retail and food outlets set in and amongst a vibrant atmosphere. Look out for a variety of special events taking place throughout the year, including specialist markets, local food tasting sessions and exhibitions.

For unique gifts and chic home accessories the Beautique has you covered, or discover a treasure trove of unique items at the family-run Kats Antique, Vintage and Collectables Centre.

Feeling peckish? Grab a hot drink and a brownie from The Handmade Brownie Company and immerse yourself in the history of the place - or try mouthwatering authentic Italian dishes at Da Vinci on Jackson Street.

Natural heritage

Plenty of walking routes and places of natural beauty await in and around Coalville. Stroll around the sweeping landscapes, visit ancient pit-heads or perhaps the protected forestland - which comes with a host of activities of its own.

If leaving the town is an option for you that day, then Nature Alive is the place for you. Sitting in the heart of the town, this small but populous preserve is an excellent place for bird watching or simply enjoying a slice of nature while shopping. If heading far from the town centre isn’t an option for you that day, then Snibston Colliery Park is only a short walk away.  With a variety of nature trails and a cafe for refreshments, there is no place that encapsulates Coalville’s transition from wasteland to wonderland quite like this newly regenerated park.

Pay homage at the Coalville Memorial Clock Tower

If you’re looking for the top things to do in Coalville, don’t miss the Grade II listed Coalville Memorial Clock Tower. A proud tribute to the fallen of WW1 and WW2. It was restored to its former glory in 2018. Well worth a visit.

Visit the Mount St Bernard Abbey

Drive out from the town centre along Oaks Road to find this beautiful piece of monastic architecture. Walk the gardens, enjoy the serene locale, and perhaps afterwards stop by St Joseph’s Tea Room down the road (or the brewery if you aren’t driving); St Bernard Abbey is an ideal place for relaxation. And yes, it does have a gift shop.
While not close to the town itself, the abbey and tearooms make for an excellent day out away from the hustle of the town centre.

Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre

Brand new and extremely well equipped, this Leisure centre is enormous. With two pools, three fitness studios, a spa, three squash courts, an eight-court sports hall, state of the art climbing wall and gym - with no less than 110 workout stations available, you will find no place better for a day of indoor activity and exercise than here.
