Natasha Braithwaite Black and White Photography

I am a photographer and darkroom printer, working out of my darkroom in Buxton. I am drawn to both the land and the sea and inspired by light and how it reveals the textures, tones and contrasts inherent in the landscape as well as the relationship that exists between the land and the sky.

I work with black and white film and all of my work is hand printed utilising traditional techniques and materials; working with film and traditional light sensitive papers is both creative and can sometimes be unpredictable. All of my work is individually hand-printed and my photographs are printed as individual one off pieces.

I also experiment with alternative photographic processes, mainly cyanotypes, which originated in the mid 1800’s at the very beginnings of photography. Cyanotypes use a contact printing process which does not require a camera; the iron based chemicals combined with exposure to sunlight produce these distinctive blue and white prints. I use both fabric and paper for this process and the results are then used to create cards, mounted prints, handmade books and even lanterns.
