The Coal Merchants of Rugby (John P H Frearson)

From before the 1800s and into the 1900s, there were increasing numbers of coal merchants in Rugby, looking to supply the population of an expanding town. Of particular interest were the coal merchants that operated from North Street, especially the four family businesses that operated in turn from 14 North Street. The three earlier families were all related. The fourth and last, the Babbedge family, who operated until the 1930s, is considered in greater detail because of the information available from the family.
