What would you do with £250 to spend in your local shops? Check out this new Breckland Council Competition to support local businesses and community groups

People who shop with their local retailers or support a district-based community group by participating in a local community lottery now have even more reason to do so, as it could see them win £250 to spend in their favourite local independent shops across Breckland. To celebrate the district’s unique independent shops and good causes, Breckland Council has launched a new competition which will run from July 4 – Independence Day – to July 27 – the inaugural Norfolk Day.

Everybody who makes a purchase with a local shop through the council’s online high street portal Shopappy.com or who buys tickets to support a local good cause at ourbrecklandlottery.com between these dates (July 4-27) will be entered into a prize draw to win £250 in ShopAppy.com vouchers. The vouchers can be used with any of the local high street shops registered with the council’s initiative, which means the prize winner could choose to pick up anything from BBQ packs from their local butcher, delicious cakes from a family run bakers, the latest fashions from an independent clothes shop, or modern technology from an locally-run electrical retailer. ShopAppy.com was launched in Breckland earlier this year to give busy shoppers a chance to browse local independent shops and purchase products online. The digital project encourages shoppers to not only shop local, but also source locally produced quality goods, which helps drive local employment, cuts down food-miles and ensures independent Breckland stores can tap into the fast moving digital e-commerce economy.

More than 100 Breckland shops and businesses  have since registered with the initiative. The Our Breckland lottery also launched earlier this year and helps to raise money for local good causes, such as charities and sports groups, as 60p from every £1 ticket sold back is given to the local organisations. The remaining money from tickets pay for the scheme’s running costs and prize pot, which a jackpot of £25,000 available every week. Cllr Paul Claussen, Executive Member of Place for Breckland Council commented “Shoppers supporting local independent retailers is vitally important to the regional economy and jobs. By using ShopAppy.com shoppers will not only enjoy the convenience of purchasing online, but also make their purchase in the knowledge they are supporting independent retailer, who not only offer high quality products and advice, but also support the local economy and jobs

Fathers Day Made Easy

Here are our top three suggestions to find that special something for Fathers Day:

  1. Something to drink - it's an oldy but a goody. Pop into your local independent wine merchant, beer shop or off-licence and speak to the shopkeeper. They'll be happy to help you find that special bottle to match his tastes. You could get him to collect his present (and your shopping) for you as many of our ShopAppy collection points are cafes, bars or pubs!
  2. Something to eat - another classic source of dad-related gifts. Dads march on their stomachs and your local town will have plenty of independent food suppliers from bakers to chocolate and sweet shops. Take a look at the options on the ShopAppy.com site to find the best independent foodie suppliers in your town.
  3. Something unique - you know he's a one-off, so get him something which reflects his personality. Is he a green-fingered maestro in the garden? An avid reader? Or a creative crafting genius on the side? The towns on ShopAppy.com have a number of unique gift shops, craft shops, bookshops, DIY and gardening shops who will help you find just the thing to support the hobby of that special man!
