Royal Mail sets Christmas 2026 posting dates: every deadline for shoppers

Royal Mail has published its last recommended posting dates for Christmas 2026, and the Post Office has put the matching in-branch cut-offs for DPD, Evri and Parcelforce on a single page. With Christmas Day falling on a Friday this year, the second class deadline lands exactly one week earlier, on Friday 18 December, while first class runs to Monday 21 December and Special Delivery Guaranteed to Wednesday 23 December.

The dates matter well beyond greetings cards. Roughly 29p in every pound spent in British shops now goes online, according to the Office for National Statistics, and the Black Friday weekend on 27 to 30 November opens the busiest five weeks of the parcel year. This guide sets out every published deadline, what has changed since 2025, and what shoppers, online sellers and anyone posting abroad or to the armed forces should do now.

In short

  • Royal Mail 2nd Class and 2nd Class Signed For: last recommended posting date Friday 18 December 2026, one day later on the calendar than in 2025.
  • 1st Class and Tracked 24: Monday 21 December; Tracked 48 is Saturday 19 December; Special Delivery Guaranteed is Wednesday 23 December.
  • Parcelforce express48 closes on Monday 21 December and express24 on Tuesday 22 December; in Post Office branches, DPD Gold runs to 23 December and Evri Next Day Tracked to 21 December.
  • International post has no country-by-country dates this year: Royal Mail is asking senders to post abroad as early as possible.
  • The MOD Christmas Families Free Mail Service opens on Monday 26 October and closes on Saturday 21 November 2026.

What are the Royal Mail last posting dates for Christmas 2026?

Royal Mail’s consumer guide to last posting dates for Christmas 2026, a two-page document dated 13 October 2026, lists five deadlines for its UK inland services. They are recommendations rather than guarantees, and Royal Mail says they are correct at the time of publishing and may change. The Post Office repeats the same dates on its own last posting dates page, which is where most people buying postage over the counter will see them.

Last recommended posting date Royal Mail service (UK inland) Days before Christmas Day
Friday 18 December 2nd Class; 2nd Class Signed For 7
Saturday 19 December Royal Mail Tracked 48; Tracked Returns 48 (to reach the sender before Christmas) 6
Monday 21 December 1st Class; 1st Class Signed For; Royal Mail Tracked 24 4
Wednesday 23 December Special Delivery Guaranteed 2

The shape of the list is familiar. The cheapest service closes first and the guaranteed next-day product closes last, with the tracked parcel services sitting in between. What has moved is the calendar: because 25 December is a Friday, every deadline falls in the working week rather than straddling a weekend, and nobody needs to find a Sunday collection to hit the Tracked 24 cut-off as they did last year.

Why the second class deadline is a full week out

Second class letters now travel more slowly than they did a few years ago. Under the universal service reforms Ofcom approved in 2025, second class letters are delivered on alternate weekdays and no longer on Saturdays, while first class keeps a six-day service. That change helps explain why Royal Mail wants second class items in the system by the Friday before Christmas week.

Ofcom’s latest consultation on stamp prices notes that Royal Mail began introducing its new operating model in June 2026 after an agreement with the Communication Workers Union, and that the regulator still regards recent delivery performance as unacceptable. In practical terms, that means the second class date is the latest sensible moment, not a comfortable target. Anyone posting a large batch of cards should treat the week before as the real deadline.

Only Special Delivery Guaranteed carries a money-back promise if it misses its delivery commitment, which is why it has the latest date of all. The other dates are the point at which Royal Mail expects an item posted before the last collection to arrive in time. Post before the time printed on the postbox plate on a deadline day, not after it, because a letter collected the following morning is effectively posted a day late.

How do Evri, DPD and Parcelforce deadlines compare?

Parcel shoppers rarely use Royal Mail alone. Many marketplace sellers dispatch through Evri, DPD or Parcelforce, and the Post Office now sells DPD and Evri services across its counters. Its Christmas page lists in-branch deadlines for those carriers alongside Royal Mail, which gives the clearest single view of the week before Christmas published so far.

Carrier and service Last posting date 2026 Where the date comes from
Evri Standard Tracked (in branch) Saturday 19 December Post Office last posting dates page
DPD 2 Day (in branch) Saturday 19 December Post Office last posting dates page
Evri Next Day Tracked (in branch) Monday 21 December Post Office last posting dates page
DPD Next Day (in branch) Monday 21 December Post Office last posting dates page
Parcelforce express48 and express48large Monday 21 December Royal Mail consumer guide, 13 October
Parcelforce express10, expressAM and express24 Tuesday 22 December Royal Mail consumer guide, 13 October
DPD Gold (in branch) Wednesday 23 December Post Office last posting dates page

The DPD and Evri dates above apply to items handed over at a Post Office counter. Both companies also run their own ParcelShop, locker and courier collection networks, and neither had published a full national Christmas 2026 timetable for those channels at the time of writing. For reference, Evri’s announcement for Christmas 2025, issued on 10 November last year, gave Friday 19 December as the last day for courier collections and standard delivery from a ParcelShop or locker, and Saturday 20 December for next-day delivery.

Lockers and parcel shops change the arithmetic

Out-of-home delivery has grown quickly, and it changes how late a shopper can safely order. Royal Mail says it now has around 30,000 parcel points, including 3,300 lockers, 8,500 Royal Mail Shops, 11,500 Post Office branches and 1,200 customer service points. The Very Group, which reported record earnings on 23 October, has said it uses roughly 15,000 InPost lockers, and our report on Very Group’s record £317.5m earnings sets out how the online retailer is pushing free delivery and lockers ahead of peak.

A locker drop-off does not move a carrier’s own cut-off, but it removes the risk of a missed doorstep collection. Royal Mail has also rolled out 3,500 parcel postboxes designed to take items up to the size of a shoebox. For small sellers, that can mean posting at 9pm on a deadline day instead of queueing at a counter before it closes.

What has changed since Christmas 2025?

The headline difference is the weekday on which Christmas falls. In 2025 Christmas Day was a Thursday, which pulled the second class deadline back to Wednesday 17 December and pushed Tracked 24 to a Sunday. This year the dates sit one calendar day later for the main letter services, but the number of days before Christmas is almost identical.

Royal Mail service Christmas 2025 deadline Christmas 2026 deadline Change in days before Christmas
2nd Class Wednesday 17 December Friday 18 December 8 days to 7 days
Tracked 48 Friday 19 December Saturday 19 December 6 days to 6 days
1st Class Saturday 20 December Monday 21 December 5 days to 4 days
Tracked 24 Sunday 21 December Monday 21 December 4 days to 4 days
Special Delivery Guaranteed Tuesday 23 December Wednesday 23 December 2 days to 2 days

The 2025 dates above are those Royal Mail confirmed last December, as reported by the Yorkshire Post. Two small changes stand out. Second class now gives a week’s margin rather than eight days, and first class has lost a day of margin because the Saturday before Christmas is no longer the cut-off.

Stamps cost more than last Christmas

Postage is also dearer. From 7 April 2026 a first class stamp rose by 10p to £1.80 and a second class stamp by 4p to 91p, as ChannelX reported when the increase was announced in March. A household sending 40 cards second class will pay £36.40 this year, compared with £34.80 at last year’s 87p price.

The second class price is the only one subject to a regulatory ceiling. On 16 October Ofcom opened a consultation proposing to extend its existing safeguard cap on second class letters, due to expire in March 2027, by a further year to 31 March 2028. The cap is linked to inflation rather than being a cash freeze, so it limits how fast prices can rise rather than fixing the stamp at 91p. Responses are due by 5pm on 27 November 2026, and Citizens Advice has argued that first class stamps should be covered too, with future increases tied to Royal Mail meeting its delivery targets.

How is Royal Mail preparing for the peak?

Royal Mail is recruiting almost 22,000 temporary workers for the festive season, it announced at the end of September. ChannelX, which covers the marketplace seller trade, reported the breakdown: 12,500 mail centre sorting roles in England, 1,243 in Scotland, 485 in Northern Ireland and 355 in Wales, plus 5,000 delivery and collection roles and 2,100 temporary lorry driver roles. The posts run from late October to early January 2027, so they cover Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well as December.

The physical network is expanding for the same window. Royal Mail says it has created 152,300 square metres of temporary space across five seasonal parcel sort centres in Atherstone, Stoke-on-Trent, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Daventry, alongside its two parcel super hubs at Warrington and Daventry. It is also adding 7,500 hire vans and bringing in more than 1,400 road haulage contractors a day, according to the company statement.

“While many people start thinking about Christmas as the festive season approaches, we’ve been planning for it since January,” Royal Mail’s chief operating officer, Jamie Stephenson, said in the recruitment announcement. Royal Mail’s hiring is roughly double the seasonal intake planned by one of the UK’s best known retailers: our report on John Lewis cutting its Christmas hiring to 10,400 shows how differently the parcel network and the shop floor are staffing for the same weeks.

Extra staff do not settle the question shoppers most care about, which is whether items arrive on time. Ofcom opened an investigation into Royal Mail’s 2025/26 delivery performance in June 2026, and its October consultation describes performance in recent years as unacceptable. Last posting dates are calculated on the assumption that the network runs to plan, so a bad week of weather or a local staffing shortage can erode the margin quickly.

The weather has already been testing the network this autumn, with Storm Boelo disrupting travel across parts of the UK on 24 October. Nobody can forecast December conditions from October. The sensible reading of the published dates is as the last day on which a delivery is likely, not the day on which the work should begin.

What should online shoppers do now?

For most people the important date is not a postal deadline but a retailer’s order cut-off, which is usually earlier. A web shop that dispatches by Royal Mail Tracked 48 needs the order picked, packed and handed over by Saturday 19 December, so its own “order by” date is likely to fall a day or two before. Few of the large retailers have published their 2026 Christmas order cut-offs yet, and they typically appear in late November.

  1. Buy gifts that need delivery before mid-December. Treat Friday 11 December as a sensible personal deadline for standard delivery orders, which leaves a week of buffer before the carriers’ own cut-offs.
  2. Check the dispatch service at checkout. A “2 to 4 working days” promise in the week of 14 December is very different from a tracked next-day service, and the difference can decide whether a parcel arrives on 24 or 29 December.
  3. Choose click and collect or a locker for late orders. A store or locker collection removes the doorstep delivery attempt that often fails in December.
  4. Keep confirmation emails. They are your evidence of what delivery date was promised if something goes wrong.

The timing of Black Friday matters here. This year it falls on 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November, which leaves nearly four weeks between the sales peak and the last posting dates. That gap is longer than many shoppers assume, but it is consumed quickly when parcels from one sale weekend share the network with the December rush.

Your rights if a parcel arrives late

When you buy online from a UK business, the goods remain the retailer’s responsibility until they reach you or a person you nominate. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if a retailer agreed to deliver by a specific date and that date was essential, for example because you told them it was a Christmas present, you can treat the contract as ended and ask for a refund if it misses that date. Where no date was agreed, the default is delivery without undue delay and within 30 days.

Most online purchases also carry a 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, starting the day after the goods arrive. Many retailers extend their returns windows into January for Christmas purchases, but that is a goodwill policy rather than a legal requirement. If you sign up to a delivery pass or loyalty subscription during the sales, note that new UK subscription cancellation rules apply for contracts taken out after New Year.

What do online sellers need to plan for?

Marketplace and web shop sellers face a sharper version of the shopper’s problem. They have to translate carrier deadlines into a published “order by” date that leaves room for picking and packing, and they have to do it before the Black Friday traffic arrives. Sellers on eBay, Amazon, Etsy and Vinted are judged on dispatch and delivery metrics, so a missed Christmas promise can cost more than one refund.

Dispatch service used Carrier cut-off Suggested last order date to display
Royal Mail 2nd Class (large letter) Friday 18 December Wednesday 16 December
Royal Mail Tracked 48 / Evri Standard Tracked / DPD 2 Day Saturday 19 December Thursday 17 December
Royal Mail 1st Class / Tracked 24 / Evri or DPD Next Day Monday 21 December Saturday 19 December, or noon on Monday 21 December for same-day dispatch
Parcelforce express24 Tuesday 22 December Monday 21 December
Special Delivery Guaranteed / DPD Gold Wednesday 23 December Tuesday 22 December, priced as a premium upgrade

The suggested order dates are a planning convention, not carrier rules, and they assume one working day for picking and packing. Sellers with a later warehouse cut-off or same-day collections can move them closer to the carrier date. Business account customers should check Royal Mail’s separate business guide, which can differ from the consumer dates on some contract services.

The demand backdrop is not straightforward. Retail sales volumes in Great Britain fell 0.4% in September, with non-store sales down 2.2%, according to the ONS, and our report on UK retail sales falling in September as online slipped before Black Friday explains why warm weather and weak confidence hit autumn spending. A softer start to the season tends to push more of the year’s sales into late November and December, which concentrates parcel volumes rather than spreading them.

Sellers also face the Budget on Wednesday 28 October, which is expected to include changes to how VAT is collected on marketplace sales. A seller planning Christmas stock and postage should budget on the stamp and carrier prices already set for 2026 and treat any Budget measure as affecting the new year rather than this peak.

Where can you still post a parcel in person?

Counter access is becoming patchier just as the Christmas queue begins. The Guardian has reported that 70 post office counters inside TG Jones shops have closed or are due to close by early 2027, and our report on TG Jones shutting 70 post offices lists towns that are losing a counter, including some whose last branch goes in January. The Post Office has pledged to replace closed branches, but replacements rarely open in December.

For most people a staffed counter is now optional for sending parcels. Prepaid labels bought online can be used at Royal Mail Shops, lockers and the newer parcel postboxes, and the Royal Mail app can provide proof of posting for items dropped in a postbox. For valuable items, a counter receipt remains the safest evidence of the time and date of posting.

Branch hours in shops, supermarkets and convenience stores vary, and some extend into the evening during December. The last collection from a postbox is printed on its plate, and many boxes have early collections on Saturdays. On Saturday 19 December, the cut-off for Tracked 48 and the in-branch Evri and DPD economy services, an early-afternoon Saturday collection could be the real deadline in your street.

What about Christmas post abroad and to the forces?

International senders get less certainty this year. Royal Mail has not published country-by-country Christmas posting dates for 2026. Instead its guide points senders to its Country Guides for the delivery aim to each destination, to the Parcelforce Worldwide Directory, and to its International Incident Bulletin for disruption, and asks people to post overseas items as early as possible because international services handle much higher volumes at this time of year.

The Post Office says international last posting dates for Evri and DPD will be published as soon as they are available. Until then, a reasonable working rule is to have parcels for Australia, New Zealand and the Far East in the post by mid-November, and Europe and North America by early December, but those are prudent estimates rather than published deadlines.

Gifts to the United States

Anyone sending to the US should allow extra time and check Royal Mail’s guidance on American import rules before posting. Royal Mail’s US information page says tax and duty do not apply to personal gifts between individuals valued under $100, but additional checks on certain regulated goods began on 22 October 2026. Our report on the US delaying its postal entry rule to 20 January explains which American customs changes have been pushed into 2027 and which already apply.

BFPO and the MOD free mail service

Forces mail runs to a much earlier timetable. Royal Mail’s BFPO guide for Christmas 2026 gives Tuesday 17 November as the last posting date for Operations and HM Ships, for arrival by 24 November, while the deadline for Static Firm Base and PJOBs addresses fell on 23 October. Personnel posting home from BFPOs worldwide, including HM Ships, are asked to send mail by Wednesday 16 December 2026.

The MOD Christmas Families Free Mail Service opens on Monday 26 October and runs until Saturday 21 November 2026. Friends and family of service personnel in the Falkland Islands, Ascension Islands and Diego Garcia can send a free small parcel from any UK Post Office, covering BFPO 485, 494, 655, 677 and 678. Parcels must weigh no more than 2kg, must carry a fully completed CN22 customs declaration with the gift box ticked, must not contain prohibited items such as aerosols or alcohol, and must be no larger than roughly a medium shoe box.

What happens next, and which dates are still to come?

Putting the dates in order makes the pinch points clear. The table below combines the published postal deadlines with the fixed retail dates that will shape demand, from the start of the forces free mail service to the first working day after Christmas.

Date What happens
Monday 26 October MOD Christmas Families Free Mail Service opens
Wednesday 28 October Budget, with marketplace VAT and business rates measures expected
Tuesday 17 November BFPO last posting date for Operations and HM Ships
Saturday 21 November MOD free mail service closes
Friday 27 November Black Friday
Monday 30 November Cyber Monday
Wednesday 16 December Target date for post from BFPOs to the UK
Friday 18 December Royal Mail 2nd Class and 2nd Class Signed For
Saturday 19 December Tracked 48; Evri Standard Tracked and DPD 2 Day in branch
Monday 21 December 1st Class, Tracked 24, Parcelforce express48, Evri and DPD Next Day in branch
Tuesday 22 December Parcelforce express24, expressAM and express10
Wednesday 23 December Special Delivery Guaranteed and DPD Gold in branch
Friday 25 December Christmas Day
Monday 28 December Substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day, which falls on a Saturday

Two features of the 2026 calendar are worth noting. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so the substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December extends the post-Christmas pause in deliveries and returns. New Year’s Day is a Friday, which means the first full working week for returns processing does not begin until Monday 4 January 2027.

Several pieces of the picture are still missing. Evri and DPD have yet to publish full national timetables for their own ParcelShop and courier networks, international dates for those carriers are pending, and most large retailers will set out their Christmas order cut-offs in the second half of November. Royal Mail says its own dates could change, and it has revised its guide before: the consumer document now in circulation is version 1.4.

Ofcom’s second class price cap consultation closes on 27 November, and a final decision is due before the current cap expires in March 2027. Its investigation into Royal Mail’s 2025/26 performance is also continuing. For shoppers and sellers the practical message does not depend on either outcome: the cheapest services close a week before Christmas, the tracked and first class options buy until the Monday, and anything posted after Wednesday 23 December is very unlikely to arrive before the holiday.

Readers who want to check the official list for themselves can find it on the Post Office last posting dates page, which shows the Royal Mail, Parcelforce, DPD and Evri deadlines side by side.
